Plated
Sometimes I think the universe is conspiring to make all my dreams come true.

For example, discovering that there was a metal/hardcore/other band in the Hawke's Bay called Gunt, and episode one of the BBC's language series "Balderdash and Piffle", where they looked at Polari, the 1960s gay London slang, while Morrissey's "Piccadilly Palare" played.

And I have found another instance. It's this plate:

It depicts Trellick Tower, a block of council flats in London, designed by Erno Goldfinger in 1966. It is in the Brutalist style, which I ♥ very much, though many people don't*. So I'm glad to see it's been immortalised in china by the People Will Always Need Plates potters.

Sadly they don't have a stockist in Aotearoa, but just knowing it exists makes me very happy.

* Ian Flemming hated it so much, he named one of the Bond villains after the architect.

Robyn - where did you see Balderdash & Piffle? I love that kind of show.

Liking the plate. Freakily, they do a Kensal Green house design. I lived there, in the same sort of house, for a while. Not far from Trellick Towers, too.

I saw Balderdash and Piffle on the interwebs, if you know what I mean.

There's a second series in production, but I'd love to see a similar series done on NZ English.

Great plates. I heart Brutalism as well, especially this building. It was not this one, however, that provoked Fleming's anger, but the block of three houses in Willow Road, Hampstead. Fleming lived in Willow Road and objected both to the demolition of the victorian houses that had stood there and their replacement by Goldfinger's building. Goldfinger lived in one of the houses.

Goldfinger tried to sue Fleming after his book was published. Cyril Connelly had suggested to Fleming that his villain be named 'Goldprick.'

Oh, thanks. My research consisted of Wikipedia, so I'm glad there's someone to clear things up.

Concrete University is one of this country's most shining examples of English Brutalism. The library tower recently won some prizes for this.

Well, I'll have to check out Concrete U when I'm next down yonder.

Auckland Uni has a few Brutalist buildings, particularly the student union building and the Maidment Theatre. Tragically the Maidment was given a makeover a few years ago, with much of the raw concrete painted to give it a softer feel. I'm sure people will be astonished at this and remedy it in 20 years time.

Cool plates, more achitects should do this, perhaps our local guild could add this to their manifesto.

When you've never heard of something, then as soon as you do it pops up a second time almost immediately?
I live in Notting Hill, and my flatmate went on a local scavenger hunt last Saturday. This building featured - clue was 'iconic building, designed by the man with the Midas Touch' - we didn't have a clue what it referred to, but now it's obvious!
Weird huh!

I was in Napier on holiday last year and there were posters advertising a Gunt gig all over town. I thought, "Man, those guys look like an awesome metal band."
